At a new paladar in Havana called Opera, diners get to return to a slower time and enjoy meals that capture the slow life/slow food movement. The atmosphere, the food and the ambience combine to create a very gracious experience.
The building that houses Opera lends its mood to the project. Built in 1920, it was home to a well known doctor and his practice. When husband and wife Yudith Almaguer Calzadilla and Claudio Taffarello decided to move out of their apartment and begin the project, they printed a large map of Havana’s Vedado district and combed it for the right place to settle. When they found the house on quiet Vedado street not far from the Hotel Presidente, it was in a state of neglect so the first project was to restore it its previous splendor.
The interior of the dining areas is bright and stunning. High ceilings and white walls are complemented by a collection of original Cuban paintings and topped off with a blue felt covered antique billiard table.
The name was easy – the couple both enjoys opera. Claudio also loves to prepare slow food concentrating on Italian, Creole and vegetarian cuisine ranging from pasta stuffed with pumpkin to a Cuban take on Hungarian goulash with a range of original, fresh dishes in between. Desserts are a specialty including fancy ice cream treats and a superb flan.
From the kitchen to the service, Opera is a family affair – Yudith’s niece and nephew are the other two members of the team. The ideal new spot for a romantic dinner or a slow food meal with friends, Opera reflects its owners’ affection for the elegance of the early twentieth century.
