Camila Cabello is single-handedly putting the word “Havana” on practically everyone’s lips (while swaying their hips). With her infectious Top 10 hit (featuring Young Thug), “Havana” from her upcoming first solo album, The Hurting. The Healing. The Loving. she is on target to hit number 1 on the Billboard U.K. 100 this week while checking in at number 7 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in the U.S. This is a pretty big deal for a 20 year old born to Mexican (father)/Cuban (mother) parents in Cojimar, Cuba (known hereto now as Ernest Hemingway’s mooring spot for his fishing boat, The Pilar).
Even though Cabello’s parents moved her family to Miami when she was six, clearly her homeland is still on her mind, in her heart and on her lips!
Fans of Cabello already know her music from her start with the Miami-based group “Fifth Harmony” who placed third in the televised singing competition The X Factor in the second season of the U.S. version in 2012. In fact, Cabello’s mother is widely quoted as saying that instead of a traditional “quinceanera party” Cabello told her mother that she wanted to audition for the X-Factor show. Through Cabello’s own perseverance she was able to convince Simon Cowell to allow her to audition and Cowell became so enamoured with Fifth Harmony (basically created with four other singers for the show) he eventually signed the group to his label, Syco Records. The all-female group went on to record two successful studio albums along with the number 4 single “Working from Home” before Cabello’s decision to pursue solo career in December, 2016.
It has already been a busy 2017 for the young and striking Cabello who not only has been writing and recording her own first album and releasing singles along the way (“Havana”, “OMG” and “Crying in the Club”) but also performed as the opening act for parts of Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic World Tour. As this was not all enough Cabello has also found time to become very involved in the “Save the Children” and “Children’s Health Fund” both non-profits promoting the betterment of children’s lives and health.
Oh, did I also mention she is the face of the clothing brand’s GUESS Fall 2017 advertising campaign?
All very heady stuff for a young woman from the sleepy fishing village of Cojimar, Cuba!
