At least once per trip to Havana I get a hankering for some pool time or a little beach action. After all, we always want to show off our tans when we get back home, n’est-ce pas? However, finding a pool or a beach is not the easiest thing to do in Havana.
You could pop by the Hotel Sevilla on the Prado and pay an entrance fee to hang by their pool, space permitting, or you could grab a cab, bus or beach shuttle and head to Playa del Este and tan with the rambunctious local crowds (which is actually something that should be done at least once per a lifetime). But if you are interested in an experience a bit more on the sophisticated side and closer to downtown, you will head out towards Marina Hemingway and set up camp under a beach umbrella at the Club Habana.
Club Habana is actually one of Havana’s only “gated communities” and is a compound of high-end housing catering mainly for ex-pats on extended stays in the city. However, Club Habana also features one of the only sandy beaches along the Havana Bay coast.
Club Habana also offers a sporting complex that features outdoor tennis courts, an indoor work-out gym, locker rooms, ping pong tables, snack bars, a full (and elegant) restaurant, a large swimming pool as well as a well-manicured beach fully equipped with chaise lounges and umbrellas and attentive service from an awesome outdoor bar. Club Habana really can be your go-to beach oasis if you want to get out of the hustle and bustle of Havana proper and just “chill” for an afternoon.
Admission to Club Habana seems to depend on whoever is manning the front gate and the day of the week. On average, admission is about 20 CUCs per person for the day. Bring your passport, though, as identification is essential to be admitted.
If sand in your toes or inside your bathing suit after a dip in the ocean is not your thing, you can opt to hang by the massive pool if it is not under renovation or repair, which seems to be quite often.
Nonetheless, Club Habana is sure to become your home away from home for all sun worshippers in need of a dose of ultra-violet rays.
